SCHOOL WaSH
Sanitation for Government Schools
After building over 2500 individual household toilets, empowHER transitioned
to building toilets in government schools to ensure girls continue schooling,
especially during adolescence. Since 2021, we built 6 toilets that provided
sanitation access to 1100+ children. The goal of our School WaSH Program
is to ensure that girls stay in school by providing them with safe spaces
to relieve themselves with dignity while also promoting their health and
hygiene.
SETU
Adolescent Girl Program
After 30 years of grassroots-level initiatives, empowHER realized that
to make women reach their true potential, we must start young! So we built
a program that impacts and shapes mindsets in the adolescent phase. We
impart life skills like financial literacy, gender equality, safety, critical
healthcare, and more such intangible yet indispensable skills. SETU’s goal
is simple- to ensure that girls grow up to become strong, resilient adults
who have the confidence to negotiate for their own wellbeing.
EDUCATION
Rakesh Jain Madhyamik Vidyamandir
Millions of girls in India are deprived of education due to gender discrimination
and patriarchal mindsets. In the year 2000, RJMV was established in Shivkar
village, Panvel to address the growing need to educate the girl child.
With a holistic approach that includes arts, culture, vocational skills,
sports, and digital technology, the school has become a beacon of learning
for both boys and girls in the surrounding communities.
More than eight in ten (84%) people took part in at least one charitable activity in the past 12 months

Our Past Programs
Financial Inclusion:
2007-2019
Financial inclusion can provide a clear pathway to empowerment and reduce social barriers that stop women from progressing in life. empowHER India’s Self-Help Group program did just that. For 12 years we worked with 3000 rural women to provide access to low-interest capital. This resulted in thousands of women having access to financial support independent of a male family member. They were empowered to fund their children’s education and use the available capital to start their own micro-enterprises. Needless to say, the impact is intergenerational.
Let’s Build Toilets:
2014-2021
We believe that access to a toilet is every person’s right. Inevitably women are at a greater disadvantage when there is a lack of proper sanitation. We forayed into the WaSH sector by building over 2500 individual household toilets impacting 13000+ individuals across 100+ villages. We conducted a third-party impact assessment 3 years later and the results showed that 84% of our toilets were being used regularly. As empowHER India’s focus further narrowed from women to girls, this program also transitioned from households to government schools.
